This 10 point assignment was going to cause me my whole grade in the class for something that I didn't even do. However, if I had done it. I would expect this kind of punishment on cheating in an exam not a 10 point homework assignment. I was even willing to give up my 10 point before getting an F for something I didn't do. Now the teacher is going to be keeping an eye out on me and missing out on the "real" cheaters who copy homework from other people that have already taken the class. (I've only heard that some people do this in my class so I won't report something that I haven't seen for myself.) 2) Teachers should set guidelines from the beginning of the class, on working together on homework assignments. This is not taught much as a way of life anymore, and we should somehow learn to be honest at some point in our lives. College is the last chance that adults have to greatly impact our lives in a formal setting, and I think every effort should be made to create in us a sense of honor and integrity that does not have to be mandated by rules. I worked as an English grader and found that students don't know how to paraphrase. Most students' citations are also very weak. I've heard from friends that students cheat regularly in religion classes. Another one of my friends had a girl offer give her a crib card when she was done with it. It goes on. I think detection is poor, and even though the teachers talk big, most won't do much about it unless you are caught actively cheating on a test or turning in someone else's paper. I've heard that other students can hold each other responsible, I don't know how that would work here. Students don't like to be thought of as finks. However, if applied right, it could work.I would like a more concrete set of steps as to what to do if we witness cheating. An honor code that penalized people who knew about cheating and did not report it with the same punishment as the student who cheated in the first place. Peers can discourage cheating by stopping it as it is witnessed.I would like the Professors to address the issue of honesty and explain the school's stance and disciplinary responce to it.I would like to see a system in place that would hold students responsible for cheating at Southern. Students should strongly influence any creation of new policies. I would like to see easier courses that have mercy on freshmen that just entered college. I would like to see the teachers teach what they are going to test on or at least spend more time explaining that material. I have taken classes that the teachers tell you exactly what you should study for a test and most students do very well. I have taken other classes that the teachers are very vague on test material. I have had responses, "You need to know it all", or "study the notes, but you are responsible for the text as well". One teacher particularly gives out study questions with page numbers to help find the answers, however, the page numbers are for an edition used in previous years that we do not have access to. I have never cheated on a test, quiz, paper, etc, however, I do understand why some would try.I would like to see more student concerned about proper citation methods, and what it means to plagiarize. Within my disciplines, ideas are our currency. So when you take someone's ideas without giving them credit, you are actually stealing their wallet. I would like to see 91ɫƵacknowledge this in a more up front way and work with the students as a team to promote a safe, respectful environmentI would like to see Southern's faculty be more alert to the problems in the classroom. A lot of faculty are very aware to the cheating that takes place but there should still be more done about this topic. I would like to see an Honor Code instilled at 91ɫƵbut as evidence by some of the papers I have graded I'm not sure some of these students are ready to be honest. I would also like to see more teachers move to creating several exams- so students will not be faced with the opportunity to cheat. I believe, however, in order to create an atmosphere where students don't cheat the faculty need to make their departments more respectable. For instance, the members of the school of nursing are less likely to cheat because of the high level of respect each student has for their fellow class members, as well as the amount of respect the community places on this program. Though, I question the role that other students play. If I saw another student cheating and considered the cheating very serious - something that could even affect me and my grade - I might say something about it. But if it's trivial or moderate cheating, I won't likely say anything and "rock the boat." Perhaps it would help to have an anonymous way of reporting cheating. As it is, I don't know of any way except to send the professor a letter or visit the professor, and that isn't confidential. An anonymous way would take pressure off of me if I happened to see someone cheating. She also gives every other person a different version of the test so that even if we wanted to, we could not cheat off of the people beside us. I know to some it may seem extreme, but I was actually very impressed by how thorough she is in making sure most of the possibilities of cheating are out of the way. Another Professor of mine walks around the classroom throughout the entire test, looking up and down the rows at each student. That, I believe, is a more effective method of preventing cheating than simply sitting at the front of the classroom. If they didn't procrastinate, they wouldn't feel overwhelmed and feel the need to cheat. A student who cheats cheats because they chose to cheat, not because they had to cheat. Perhaps a renewed emphasis on "needed study time" is necessary, but that's more of a mindset, not some rule that needs to be made. Otherwise, no specific changes.Students shouldn't be expected to monitor their peers. That is the job of the instructor, and if there is a cheating problem, the instructors should be more vigilant.Students shouldn't be held responsible for other students actions. The only one I know about is booked, because he just got his hours cut. He taught very well to my learning style, and my grades dropped when his hours did.Being that we are a christian school we should consult the scriptures on this and every matter. I would probably not report another student cheating because personally that is between that person and God but I think that we should take the advice given in the Bible. If I had a problem with seeing someone cheating in my class, I would talk to them afterward about it. I would let them know that it's not only unfair to others but I am also concerned about them (letting them know that they are only cheating themselves). I think that after this I would consult a counselor or a chaplain about ways that I can confront this person if they continue to do it. Then if the behavior still persist I would give the teacher a general warning about an anonymous person cheating so that they can give a look out. I don't think it's fair when other students cheat on exams but I still would not tell on the person. They had a A and B test. So that every other person has a different test. The do have the same answers, but the order is different. I think this makes harder for people to cheat which is good. I think more teachers should do this too. I know that the nursing department does a good job keeping a close eye on anyone who may be cheating and has fairly strong disciplinary actions for it. I believe that students would be less likely to cheat if they knew that they would be tried by their peers. I think that the descriptions above are too general. Things like copying homework, or getting homework answers can have different implications, depending on which class you are in. If you have a class that requires you to complete a process for your homework, I don't see a problem with looking at someone elses homework to understand yours. In that case, you may end up writing the same thing as your classmate but you also have an understanding that will help you when test time comes. As far as tests go, it also depends on whether or not you must complete a process (as in math or music theory or other science classes) or if it is multiple choice (as in nursing). Those tests requiring a process don't need to be changed nearly so often, because they require an understanding of the material. I do think multiple choice tests should be changed more often. Incidentally, I am currently teaching a class in one of the departments here, giving me a different perspective on this topic. For the class I'm teaching, I don't mind if the students work together. I would like them to work alone on quizzes but on homework, I really don't mind if they work together. My observation is that most students who want to learn will try their best to learn the material. And if working together helps them, then that is fine with me. Those students who don't have the desire to learn won't put the effort into their work, and even if they cheat, they won't get good grades. So they are, in a way, punishing themselves. I think that the problem isn't the form of punishment but rather that it is so inconsistant because there are many people who cheat who get away with it and will continue to do so. Maybe if there was better ways of detecting cheating it would be more consistantI think that the types of assessment at 91ɫƵare focused on what is called, "teaching to the test." General instruction, lectures, and quizzes and tests are focused much on details, names, dates, and facts rather than on concepts, understanding, and dominance of a topic. There is also not much either knowledge or implementation, especially in the sciences, of different learning styles, and their affect on performance during score-oriented exams. There needs to be more focus on competency-based education over all the departments.I think that there are other more important things to pay attention to for students at Southern. They let me know it was going on and told me to be extremely careful protecting my papers during tests. Of course, I did my best. However, the classroom was very overcrowded and it was difficult to shield my paper from all angles. Since the identity of the cheating student was protected, I did not know which angle it was most important to protect from, and I only have two arms! Using a scantron sheet plus a test handout on the desk surface made it harder than just having one paper to protect. It was also distressing and distracting for me while taking tests to know that someone nearby had cheated on me in the past and could do so again. It's hard to focus on a really difficult exam when you know you can neither trust nor escape those around you.
